Amid a rising number of dengue cases in coastal Barguna and across the country, members of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho in the district’s Betagi upazila have launched a public awareness campaign for school and college students to help prevent the spread of the disease.
Dengue awareness campaign launched in BargunaOn Sunday morning, the group carried out educational activities in several educational institutions, distributing informational leaflets to raise awareness about the dangers of dengue fever and the steps they can take to combat it.
As monsoon season often sees a surge in dengue infections, the Ministry of Health has called for increased public campaigns and preventive actions.
During the campaign, Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s Betagi upazila President Md Kamal Hossain Khan spoke about the breeding habits of the Aedes mosquito—the primary carrier of the dengue virus.
“These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in stagnant, clean water found in places like flower pots, unused drums, abandoned tires, coconut shells, and plastic containers. The eggs can survive for up to two years,” he said.
“To prevent dengue, we must monitor our surroundings for standing water and ensure thorough cleanliness. Without awareness and proper hygiene, we cannot fight dengue,” Kamal Hossain added.
The campaign stressed the need for community-wide participation in the fight against dengue, emphasising that prevention begins with individual responsibility.
