A three-month sewing training centre for underprivileged women was inaugurated on Friday in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga, an initiative by Bashundhara Shuvosangho aimed at promoting women’s self-reliance.
The centre, funded and organised by Bashundhara Shuvosangho, officially opened at 11am with 20 women participating in the first session. The training is designed to equip them with the skills and tools necessary to achieve financial independence.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Shamsul Alam, president of Shuvosangho’s Jibannagar unit. Other attendees included Shuvosangho adviser and Kaler Kantho Jibannagar correspondent Zahirul Islam, journalist Shefayet Ullah, Women Affairs Department assistant Firoz Ahmed, and sewing instructor Nasima Khatun.
Speaking at the event, Zahirul Islam said, “Bashundhara Group’s volunteer platform Shuvosangho is working nationwide to foster social and humanitarian development. Through scholarships, skill training, winter clothing distribution, and financial assistance, Shuvosangho consistently supports the underprivileged.”
“As part of this commitment, Shuvosangho conducts sewing training in many upazilas to empower disadvantaged women. Today, 20 women in Jibannagar have this opportunity. Not only is the training free, but upon completion, each trainee will receive a sewing machine to help start their own ventures,” he added.
Journalist and returnee migrant Shefayet Ullah encouraged the participants, saying, “No one sits idle abroad. I urge you not to remain idle either. With the skills you gain here, you can earn an income and contribute to your family and the nation’s economy.”
Shamsul Alam emphasised, “Our motto is ‘In every good work, by everyone’s side.’ We have identified that some trainees are students, housewives, widows, or divorcees. With this training and sewing machines, they will be able to support themselves and their families. Shuvosangho will always stand by them.”
Sewing instructor Nasima Khatun expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the project and pledged to provide hands-on training to all participants.
