Shuvosangho remembers folk singer Farida Parveen in Mymensingh

Bashundhara Shuvosangho in Mymensingh’s Gouripur upazila has organized a memorial rally and discussion meeting in remembrance of Ekushey Padak-winning Lalon singer Farida Parveen.

The programme was held on Friday (19 September) at the hall room of Swajan Samabesh, a readers’ organisation, on Hatem Ali Road in the municipal town.

The event began with a mourning rally, followed by a commemorative discussion attended by Shuvosangho members and invited guests.

The discussion meeting, conducted by Obaidur Rahman, senior member of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Gouripur upazila unit, featured speeches from its president Shankar Ghosh Pilu, general secretary Md Harun Miah, Gouripur correspondent of the Daily Jugantor Roich Uddin Roich, president of the Journalists’ Unity Forum Shahjahan Kabir Hira, and assistant professor of Dhaniakandi High School Mosharraf Hossain Sohel.

Speakers also recalled the colourful life of the late Farida Parveen, including poet Selim Al Raj, lecturer of Gournipur Mohila Degree College; Amirul Momenin, executive editor of Gournipur Public Library; and Golam Mohammad GM, principal of Bhutiar Kona Adarsha High School and College.

The cultural segment of the programme included renditions of Lalon songs by Gopa Das, Anamika Sarkar, Chaina Rani Sarkar, Suchi Sarkar, and Tithi Sarkar of Chandar Hat and Gournipur Agradoot branches. Bijeon Sarkar accompanied them on tabla while Amirul Momenin played the dotara.

Addressing the event, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Gouripur upazila president Shankar Ghosh said, “We have lost a talented artiste. Farida Parveen will live among us for long through her songs of Lalon.”

General secretary Harun Miah said, “Farida Parveen was a shining star in our music arena. Lalon songs gained more splendour in her voice. She carried Lalon’s songs abroad and introduced Bangladesh to the world. Her passing is an irreparable loss to the country. Shuvosangho always prioritises good work, and we are proud to arrange this programme in her memory. The continuity of good work will remain with Shuvosangho.”

Among others present at the rally and cultural segment were Shuvosangho members Asif Talukder, Jahangir Islam Sabbir, Joy Acharya, Sheikh Mohammad Sourav, Afridi Hasan Nirab, Abdus Salam, Gournipur Press Club treasurer Shamim Khan, and Holy Siam Shrabon, Gournipur correspondent of Shomoyer Konthoswar.
