With the holy Eid-ul-Fitr drawing nearer, the daring activities of different criminal gangs, including mugging and doping ones, have marked a rise in and around the capital.
The crimes are taking place repeatedly in lanes, by-lanes and streets of the capital, local people said.
Many people, especially passers-by and passengers of rickshaws and auto-rickshaws and other small vehicles, fall prey to different organised gangs of criminals and lose their cash money, mobile phones, gold ornaments and other valuables.
In recent times, robbery incidents have increased in Khilgaon Malibagh Railgate, Kamalapur, Motijheel, Hatirjeheel, Shahbagh, Paltan, Maniknagar, Nandipara and Gulistan areas.
In most cases, robbers attack pedestrians with sharp weapons when they try to resist them.
Law enforcers have launched massive hunts for listed criminals, including muggers, robbers and extortionists, in the capital just ahead of the Eid festival, police sources said.
“The plain-clothes and detective police are conducting operations in different places to catch the listed muggers and extortionists,” said DMP media wing chief Faruq Hossain.
Centring on any festivals, criminals, including muggers, robbers and dopers, become more active, he added.
Besides, there are many drug addicts on different city footpaths and footbridges. Most of these addicts are involved in immoral acts, the DC said.
“Considering this festival, we (DMP) usually increase different police unit on different strategic points in bus, launch terminals and railway stations to maintain law and order.”
As part of the move, police drives are also underway in and around the capital to catch such the criminals. Many gangsters are being caught in different parts of the capital. They are sent to jail, but they come out of jail on bail and again get involved in the crimes, Faruk also said.
Meanwhile, snatchers hacked a female student of a private university in Aftabnagar area of capital Dhaka on Sunday night, leaving her seriously injured.
The injured, Apurna Akter Eti, is a student of the Pharmacy Department of East West University.
Eti's classmate Tanver Kayes said three/four snatchers stopped her at Block-B around 10:15 pm on her way home from a gym and asked to give them mobile phone, money and bag with her.
A scuffle took place between her and the muggers when she refused to give them these things, he said.
At one stage, they hacked her with sharp weapons and fled the scene, Tanveer added.
Badda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said the injured student was admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Police have already started working to identify those who are involved in the incident, he added.
Detective police in a recent drive arrested 27 suspected members of an organised mugging gang who targeted people at bus stands and quiet places.
DB Ramna and Lalbagh divisions made the arrests in several drives conducted in Hazaribagh, Chawkbazar, Lalbagh, Kamrangirchar and Shahbagh areas to ensure security during Ramadan.
During the primary interrogation, the arrestees said they were part of a gang and targeted people at bus stands in Dhaka city, made them unconscious and looted cash and valuables, said the police officer.
