A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the seizure of assets of Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon, a former lawmaker and whip, and his wife, Mehbuba Alam, along with his daughter, Nuzayma Mahmood, over graft allegations.

Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the order and imposed a travel ban on Swapon and his wife on Sunday.

According to the ACC petition, Swapon’s immovable property ordered to be seized is worth around Tk2.80 crore.

Additionally, the court has ordered to freeze 28 bank accounts with a total balance of Tk16,19,859 and Tk22,223,900 in investments in 32 entities.

Furthermore, the court has ordered to seize the immovable property worth Tk2.95 crore and movable property worth Tk77,87,600 in the name of his wife Mehbuba Alam as well as investments worth Tk15,63,800 in the name of his daughter Nuzayma.

The court, however, in a separate case ordered the seizure of immovable property worth Tk22,878,190 in the name of Afroza Sultana, wife of former lawmaker Anwarul Ashraf Khan.

According to the ACC’s pleas, investigations are ongoing against the accused over graft charges.

There is a possibility that the accused may transfer the ownership of the assets acquired in their names. That is why it is necessary to order the freezing and attachment of these assets and impose a travel ban on the individuals for the sake of a fair investigation, ACC added.
