The year's second consignment of Indian chicken eggs was imported through Benapole land port on Sunday, in a bid to tame surging domestic prices, just about a month after the first consignment entered the country on 9 September.

In the latest consignment, more than 2.31 lakh eggs were imported with each priced likely at Tk7.50 after adding import tariffs.

The import was confirmed by Masudur Rahman, revenue officer of Benapole Customs' port cargo branch.

He said that the eggs will be delivered to markets as soon as possible after due inspection. In September last year, during the Awami League regime, former commerce minister Tipu Munshi permitted the import of four crore Indian eggs in phases to tame runaway prices at home.

In the first consignment on 5 November 2023, 61 thousand 950 chicken eggs were imported through Benapole port.

In the second consignment and this year's first consignment, 2 lakh 31 thousand 840 pieces of eggs were imported.
