Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has warned that if the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections face any obstruction, he will resign and disclose to the nation exactly who is responsible.
“Organising DUCSU elections is challenging in any situation. However, if there is an attempt to obstruct it, I will step down and reveal who is doing what to the nation,” the VC said at a discussion meeting held at the TSC auditorium on Saturday, marking the university’s Black Day.
The meeting was attended by teachers, students, and officials.
During the meeting, the VC emphasised that the eyes of the entire nation are now fixed on the DUCSU elections.
He informed that all preparations are progressing under the guidance of the Election Commission, and multiple rounds of discussions have already been held with candidates.
“We have no permanent enemies. We are working with everyone from law enforcement to the army. In today’s reality, they are all important partners. And Dhaka University is also an institution of the people. So, we will learn from history while respecting each other,” he added.
Highlighting the historical role of DU, Niaz said the university has always raised its voice against injustice during critical junctures in national history.
He urged today’s generation to follow that tradition and called upon all stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies and the army, to work together to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
Meanwhile, the campus is witnessing a festive atmosphere ahead of the polls despite the observance of Black Day.
This year, a total of 509 candidates submitted nominations, of which 462 have been declared valid.
Candidates may withdraw their nominations until 25 August. The final list will be announced on 26 August, with voting scheduled for 9 September.
Mentionable, Dhaka University observes Black Day every year in memory of the events of 20-23 August, when the military-backed caretaker government carried out repression against DU teachers, students, and officials.
The incident triggered a massive protest that spread across the country.
