Another firefighter has died from injuries sustained in the Tongi chemical warehouse fire, raising the death toll among fire service personnel to two.

Nurul Huda, 38, succumbed to his burns on Wednesday at 2:40pm while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Doctors said he had suffered 100% burns. Nurul Huda, son of Abdul Mansur from Gafargaon, Mymensingh, joined the Fire Service on 29 March 2007, and was serving at the Tongi Fire Station.

Earlier on Tuesday, firefighter Shamim Ahmed, 40, died of his injuries.

He was buried the following day in his native village Pijahati in Kendua upazila of Netrokona.

The fire broke out on Monday night at the warehouse of Famous Chemical Limited in Tongi’s Sahara Market.  A chemical explosion injured four firefighters who were battling the blaze.

All were admitted to the burn institute.

Two others – Joy Hasan, 28, and Jannatul Nayeem – remain under treatment.

Fire Service spokesperson Shahjahan Sikdar said Joy’s condition is critical, while Nayeem is stable. Sikdar added that Singaporean burn specialist Dr Chong Si Jack visited the hospital on Tuesday night and assessed the patients. Authorities will decide soon whether the injured will be sent abroad for advanced treatment.
