Islamic Foundation turning a blind eye to official’s ‘illegal appointment’
Several investigations find irregularities, no action yet
The Islamic Foundation is yet to take any action against one of its officials even after multiple internal and external investigations found his appointment illegal.
The foundation’s Publication Officer Md Rezowanul Alam was investigated by multiple committees of Islamic Foundation, Ministry of Religious Affairs, and Anti-Corruption Commission at different times. All the investigations found him guilty of altering personal information, influencing his job interview, and corrupting his appointment process.
However, the ninth-grade officer has been serving his rank equivalent to assistant director without any interruption since 16 February 2017. Currently, he is attached to Islamic Foundation’s Barguna district office, said an insider seeking anonymity.
On 26 November 2016, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, lawmaker of the Awami League and then-governor of Islamic Foundation, tweaked Rezowanul’s viva voce score, changed it from 12 to 16, and made the way for him to join the public service, found an investigation conducted by the religious affairs ministry.
Although the lawmaker recommended Rezowanul for the post, the recruitment committee’s member secretary and representatives of the ministries of religious affairs, public administration, and finance did not sign the recommendation. Thus, the appointment was not approved by the recruitment board. Rezowanul also altered information related to his birthplace to get the benefits of district quota, the report added.
In 2020, to investigate the irregularities in the appointment process, the religious affairs ministry formed a high-level investigation committee. Headed by Dr Moazzem Hossain, then additional secretary (development) of the ministry, the committee found that Rezowanul was appointed in the place of an eligible freedom fighter’s child which was a clear violation of the freedom fighters’ quota policy.
In 2021, during a drive, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) identified the irregularities too and sent a letter to then director general of Islamic Foundation to cancel Rezowanul’s appointment and take departmental action against the responsible officer. The Daily Sun obtains a copy of the ACC letter.
Amid these many investigation reports against Rezowanul and recommendation of cancellation of his appointment, he faced no action for direct intervention of then lawmaker RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, identifies a recent investigation.
The religious affairs ministry recently formed a committee, headed by Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain, to investigate all the irregularities and corruptions of the Islamic Foundation. The draft of the latest probe report was prepared on 25 August, 2025 and it too confirmed the irregularities in the appointment process.
Contacted, Islamic Foundation’s Director General Abdus Salam Khan said they would take appropriate action after formally receiving the latest investigation report. He also acknowledged the ACC investigation and recommendation.
Meanwhile, talking to the Daily Sun, Publication Officer Md Rezowanul Alam denied all the allegations against him and said he was not involved in any wrongdoing. He also said that his recruitment process was diligently followed. He then asserted that others were conspiring against him.
