Dhaka commuters faced a rough start to the week as early morning drizzle brought traffic to a crawl. Though the light rain did not cause waterlogging, it was enough to slow vehicle movement across the city. Key thoroughfares—including Uttara, Khilkhet, Banani, Malibagh, and Bijoy Sarani—were choked with long tailbacks, leaving office-goers stranded and struggling to reach work on time.

A spot visit to these areas on Sunday (September 14) morning showed that even in light rain, vehicle movement had almost come to a standstill. Despite continuous honking, cars could not move forward. On both sides of the roads, office-goers were seen waiting for buses—some with umbrellas, others running in the rain without one in order to catch transport. Taking advantage of the situation, rickshaw and CNG-run auto rickshaw fares also shot up.

In particular, from Banani intersection to Mohakhali, long queues of private cars and buses were stuck. Drivers, moving cautiously because of the drizzle, made traffic congestion worse at the smaller intersections.

Aftab Ahmed, a commuter on a bus, said: “Normally it takes me one hour to reach my office. Today I’ve been sitting on the bus for over an hour, and I still haven’t crossed Banani.”

Afroza Begum, another commuter, said, “My office is in Uttara, but I’ve been waiting for a bus in Badda for an hour. Because of the drizzle and the rush of passengers, I couldn’t manage to get on any public transport. Now I have no choice but to hire a CNG auto-rickshaw, and the drivers are taking full advantage of the situation.”

Similar scenes were observed in Rampura, Jahangir Gate, Bijoy Sarani, and Farmgate. While no waterlogging was reported, many people opted to use personal vehicles due to the rain, which increased the number of cars on the road. As a result, traffic jams became more severe at intersections with traffic signals.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department reported that Dhaka may continue to experience intermittent rain or thunderstorms throughout the day. Cloudy skies are also expected during the first half of the day, which could cause temperatures to drop slightly compared to previous days.

A morning forecast indicated the possibility of thundershowers under partly cloudy skies. Winds from the south and southwest may blow at speeds of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour during this time.
