Jatiya Party (one faction) Secretary General Mujibur Rahman Chunnu has issued an unconditional apology to the nation for his party’s participation in what he described as a morally questionable election held under ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, acknowledging possible mistakes in political judgment while defending the legality of the decision.
Chunnu said, “By participating in the election as a party, we did not commit any illegal act. But if there has been any moral wrongdoing or any mistake, then I stand here at this council to offer an unconditional apology to the nation on behalf of the Jatiya Party.”
He made these remarks on Saturday (9 August) at the party’s 10th National Council at Emmanuel Party Center.
Chunnu said, “For almost four years, I have served as the Secretary General of the Jatiya Party. Mistakes on my part may have occurred. I hope you will view any such mistakes with understanding. As Secretary General, I can only tell the nation that in politics, while making decisions for the party, we may not have always taken the right decision. We have participated in many past elections. At times, some have mocked us or labeled us as collaborators of certain parties or of autocratic regimes.”
He further said, “I believe that by participating in elections as a party, we have not done anything illegal. However, if there has been any moral fault or mistake, then I stand here at this council to offer an unconditional apology to the nation on behalf of the Jatiya Party.”
Chunnu urged all political parties, saying, “The Jatiya Party is a party that believes in peaceful politics — a modern democratic party. We want to move forward with the people of the country. We will do this by following all rules, regulations, and laws. For this, we seek the cooperation of all political parties, including the government.”
The National Council was attended by Jatiya Party Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju as the chief guest and was presided over by Acting Chairman Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud.
Special guests included Co-Chairman ABM Ruhul Amin, Secretary General Sheikh Shahidul Islam, and Co-Chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid, among others.
