The BNP is hopeful about winning the national election scheduled for February next year, said the party’s Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain in an exclusive interview with the Daily Sun.
The senior BNP leader emphasised the need for a free, fair and neutral election, saying, “People have been deprive of their voting rights for almost a decade and a half. They now want to vote and elect their preferred candidates. The people want their representatives to send them to parliament. They will not accept anything less.
“Holding the national election on time will foil all anti-Bangladesh and anti-democracy conspiracies at home and abroad. Moving towards elections will shift the entire country’s focus to the polls, defeat these conspiracies, and guide the government towards peace, democracy, and equality.”
Mentioning the government’s commitment to holding the polls in the first half of February, the senior BNP leader said, “The government’s urgent duty is to hold a truly free and fair election.”
About the Awami League (AL), he said that it was unfortunate that the party destroyed the electoral system to cling to power. Among others, this was one of the reasons that fueled the mass uprising in 2024, ousted the AL regime, and made them flee.
About the proportional representation (PR) system, he said people could not directly elect their representatives in this system.
So voters would not know who they elected with their votes, and the MPs would not be able to say which area they represented.
He then stressed on the importance of a level playing field. “Without a level playing field, voters cannot freely choose their candidates, and such an election will be ineffective and fail to meet people’s expectations.”
Mosharraf stressed the need to try crimes by the ousted government and killings in the July uprising. He also mentioned the state reform issue saying that an elected parliament should decide disputed issues after public debate.
Responding to a question regarding the Jatiya Party, he said, “It is the responsibility of the interim government. They should take the decision about the party with an impartial point of view. We have never objected anything here.
The senior BNP leader also warned of the divisions among anti-fascist forces. He said this could let the Awami League exploit the situation. He, however, expressed confidence in the interim government about holding a fair election.
Mosharraf also accused opponents of spreading misinformation to tarnish the BNP’s image, saying, “We take action against our party men wherever we receive complaints or objections. The party will continue to maintain that system inside the organisation. The propaganda will not last long and conspirators wouldn’t succeed.”
