Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal is now conscious and talked to his members, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Mahbub anam confirmed the news to Daily Sun. The 36-year-old cricketer, suffered a heart attack during a Bashundhara Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match on Monday.
Tamim, who was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP, felt discomfort in his chest while on the field and was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
According to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Debashish Chowdhury, Tamim underwent an initial electrocardiogram (ECG) at a nearby KPJ Specialized Hospital, which revealed abnormalities. Despite feeling discomfort, he attempted to return to the field but soon experienced severe chest pain again, prompting his second hospital admission.
Dr. Rajib Hasan, director of KPJ Specialized Hospital, confirmed that the surgery was successful, but Tamim remains under intensive observation for the next 24 hours. “His condition became critical after being brought in, but every necessary medical procedure was performed. By the grace of Allah, his condition is now stable. However, he is not completely out of danger yet,” Dr. Rajib stated.
Dr. Moniruzzaman Maruf, who led the cardiac team, successfully performed the angioplasty and stenting, ensuring that the blockage was fully cleared. “The stenting was done very smoothly and efficiently,” he added.
A close member of the team of doctors who treated Tamim told Daily Sun that, “a medical team at KPJ Hospital conducted emergency procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 22 minutes and three defibrillator shocks to revive him. Following this, an angiogram confirmed a blockage in one of his arteries, leading to an urgent angioplasty, during which a stent was inserted to restore normal blood flow.”
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a statement confirming Tamim’s cardiac arrest and the successful emergency intervention. BCB President Faruque Ahmed expressed gratitude to the medical professionals involved, stating, “We are very thankful to all the medics and specialists for their swift actions in this critical situation. The outpouring of concern for Tamim reflects how much he is loved and appreciated by the nation.”
The BCB also assured that they are closely monitoring his condition and will provide all necessary support for his recovery. Authorities, including the Chief Advisor’s Office, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Council, have been receiving regular updates.
Tamim’s family and the BCB have requested fans and well-wishers to refrain from gathering at the hospital to avoid disrupting medical services. Further updates will be shared with the media as his condition progresses.
In the wake of the incident, the BCB postponed its scheduled board meeting to focus on Tamim’s health and well-being. The entire cricketing community and the nation remain united in prayer for his full recovery.
